fourteen.

b

he showed up squalling and pink-wrinkled beautiful and the best thing i'd ever seen. and when, two days later, the hospital sent us on home i kept thinking, are you sure? you're seriously trusting us with an actual human being?

and fourteen years later we still don't know what we're doing, and this boy, our firstborn, he's patient and easy as he walks us through the finer steps of growing toddlers and fifth graders and teenagers.

he's a bunch of exuberance under sometimes-shy, and pesters and nurtures his siblings in equal parts. he's cautious, quickly bruised, responsible. he blooms this smile, warm and quick, like july.

we're bent toward expecting too much of him at every age, and it's a miraculous, beautiful thing to watch him flourish in spite of all the holes in our so-called parenting. he's growing straight up in love with Jesus.

fourteen. crazy.

happy birthday, b. you're the best kind of wonderful.

Can I just say that I love how you honor your kids with such loving words? I love it when moms encourage and cherish their children for who they ARE and not what they DO - especially when who they are includes a love for Jesus.

"Her children arise and call her blessed..." Proverbs 31:28

I got all tearful, thinking of my son as I read this. He's my first-born, and there are 9 years b/w him and the next in line. Now, raising his sisters, I understand: he spoiled me. He made me think raising children was much easier than it turns out to be, most of the time. What a blessing to have an easy-going, responsible child. Happy Birthday to your beautiful boy.

No way you're mom to a 14 year-old!!!!! I don't care what kind of proof you can provide, I won't believe it.

Gorgeous--him AND your words about him. That's some kid, mom... and must be SOME mom who raises one to be such :)

Happy Birthday, B!

BTW - your two boys, on their knees, praying for Jesus yesterday...I realize it was acting for a play, but the sight just plum welled me up.

What more joy is there in a mother's heart than the assurance that their children are with their Heavenly Father always?
