blooming.

peonies are ridiculous.

bloom7b

they're completely over-the-top, all that excess frill and fuss, and in the most obnoxious shades of pink. i cannot, for the life of me, figure out why i am so crazy about them.

bloom3b

maybe it's the way they smell like peaches, all summery warmth and honey.

bloom2b

perhaps it's their enthusiasm, the way those rosy fists explode into silky poms with a heft that makes their thin stems tremble and bow.

maybe it's 'cause God does ruffles like no one i know.

whatever it is, they win me over every time.

speaking of blooming, we had quite the time at kindergarten round-up. elle has proclaimed school 'awesome. they have good juice.'

bloom1b

while her brothers are counting down the days till summer, she can't wait for august and the start of her educational career.

(dear elle's kindergarten teacher, whoever you are: you may want to get a LOT of rest this summer.)

Thank you for such a thoughtful take on peonies:) loved reading it. Our peonies are finally starting to bloom, can't wait to catch the first scent.

Your peonies are SO beautiful! When mine bloom (still a month away-- at least the pinks ones anyway) I will know summer is here...... mmmmm, they smell so good.
Isn't it funny how one kid can't wait until school starts, and one can't wait until it ends?

I have some of that same variety sitting on my desk right now, they just opened yesterday. They are magnificent, aren't they?

I love peonies. My grandma used to have them growing all over her farm, so this time of year really makes me think of grandma.

Ridiculous pink. You are exactly right. Of course, mine bloomed just today and I was out pretending to know how to take pictures of them and I thought "Some people might desaturate the color on these...make them barely there and romantic and moody. I totally understand the logic there, but these are PEONIES. They naturally defy all of our rules -- with loads of charm and panache!"

OK, that may not be verbatim...but you see my point. And in case you don't, I'll spell it out here: I'm so pleased to see that you're down with the ridiculous pink.

We should both ditch our grey and toss on something pink and ruffly in their honor, when the last bloom fades...

ps- Could you stitch me up something pink and ruffly? I'll need it in about...2 weeks?

Elle's kindergarten teacher will not have take any time trying to assess who to have be a class leader. Elle will just assume the role. After directing 3 older brothers for a few years a room full of kindergarteners should be a piece of cake, or a box of juice. Can't wait to hear her stories about school.

Snort! They are ridiculous and wonderful...I guess you love them for the same reason I love ugly, bombastic animals. Give me a crazy looking animal any day, all feathers and fur. Especially ugly chickens. BUt, they don't smell like peaches and summer...
