wherein i exchange my morals for a coat

i have officially lowered my standards.

i'd been donning the same brown coat for 12.5 years, and as much as i coveted a newish version, i couldn't bring myself to buy one. browny is torn at the cuffs, missing half the buttons from the button-out-lining, bald in spots that used to be faux-suede, splattered with white and green paint, and faded all over.

the problem is that the thing is dead useful: toasty warm and comfy as a hooded duvet. and, unfortunately, i have Issues tossing (and replacing) a perfectly useful coat, even if it is The Incarnation of Ugly.

however.

american eagle (which is the store of choice for thirtyish people whose fashion sense hasn't matured beyond age nineteen) had a blimey of a sale wherein The Coat of My Deepest Longing in muted grey with the polka dotted lining and fabulously furry trim was on clearance, PLUS i was armed with an extra 20% off code (which they give you when you sign up for their online offers, meaning you fork over your email address and your soul). at this point they sensed i was doing some serious wavering, so they threw in free shipping and it was all over.

goodbye social conscience. hello new coat.

let me introduce you.

internet, meet The Amazing Monocolor Dreamcoat (modeled by elle, as her cuteness exceeds mine by exponential proportions)

{vintagey color wash, also used in the above images}

{edgy black and white version}

{another b&w, this one with the highlights blown for a touch of the dramatic}

disclosure: so pretty much i only told you the coat story because it proffered me a handy excuse to show off these shots of My Grossly-Overphotographed Youngest Child. she is cute, though, eh? (and the story is, sadly, all true. so much for saint nic.)

well besides the fact that you deserve a new coat after 12.5 years (although I can relate as my winter coat no longer zips at all and I am still wearing it out in the blustery winter air)....Elle is the cutest darn thing there ever was. She looks like a kindly lion...I can almost hear her roaring!

take a bow Jenn

Morals for coat...I see no issue there? Is it just me? If so, then I just sold my soul for a new pair of strappy stiletto sandals in the middle of February!

Elle is luminous...

That is an amazing coat, and since you live somewhere that you truly need it, I see your standard is actually raised, not lowered. You can still wear old browny when you are, say, shoveling a muddy walkway, so as to not soil the new one, thereby still not getting rid of something useful.

I have a similar coat in my closet, about 50 years old (no that doesn't make me 65 years old- it's vintage)...holes, ripped lining, impossible to get your arm through the sleeve without causing more nisy ripping, threadbare at edges, but I so love it! And refused to give it up until I found a close replica this year!!!

oh man I am just like you - if something is still functional it kills me to give it up & get something new - hence my '99 toyota minivan with 150,000 miles! The coat rocks though and Elle looks fab - soon there will come a time that you get something new & it will disappear into her room for good LOL!

I love the black and whites and she is a doll. I don't know that you can ever have too many photos.

I undertand your coat - I have a sweatshirt, the sleeves and collar are frayed to the point they have literally shredded off in a few places. It is so worn you can see through the fabic in a few places as well. It's probably 13 years old, it's still my favorite and when I'm having one of 'those' days it's like putting on a hug. My husband and brother have each bought me new ones and I couldn't part with it. My husband has given up, he knows I'm still going to wear old faithful.

Yeah, I washoping for apic of the polka dotted lining! My two oldest girls got? AE coats this year- my oldest picked the navy blue plaid parka w/the faux fur and my 11 yo picked the yellow pea coat. The only AE I own are two WELL worn sweatshirts left over from 1999 when I was a 26 single mom of two and still fit in AE clothes. But these two sweatshirts were extra roomy then and do me well now.

Enjoy your new coat- it's pretty cute!
